Knowledge on Knowledge Management

From a very practical point of view, Knowledge Management is about
getting answers to questions

bulletFind an expert with the answer in 30 minutes
bulletGet me a document with the answer in 30 seconds
bulletFind the figures with the answer in 3 seconds

This requires so called Knowledge Assets (IA) or Intellectual Capital (IC), such as an Intranet that connects people and stores documents with knowledge.
The most important Intellectual Assets are the Communities of Practice (CoP). They are groups of experts that have a heart for one of the core competences of the organization. They consult each other in daily practice, exchange experiences, recommend practices, create and update documents on the Intranet, foster high potentials, create future vision...

The role of management is not only to put the Intellectual Assets in an organization, but also to make sure that people ask relevant questions! This requires

bulletThe development of a vision: if the organization doesn't know where it is going, how can it know in which (Intellectual) Assets to invest?
bulletPut the right people on the right place: travel with people that want to realize the vision, and see clearly their role as their mission!

So it is clear that a critical success factor is the dynamic interplay of knowledge work as a social process and the knowledge tools where documents and software are critical. Secondly, it's important to realize what is knowledge. Most knowledge is in the people, not in documents. This is the difference between so called tacit knowledge and explicit knowledge.
